Options for your playhouse roof

We offer all of our playhouse designs in a choice of different roof options to suit your needs and budget.

Mineral Felt Roof

A standard finish, which is good at keeping out the weather but is not particularly the most attractive roof option.  Ideal if the roof is not seen

  • The roof bearers are fitted to span across the apex: the size would depend on the span but it would be a minimum of 75mm x 50mm, the timber would be good quality redwood, planned with swept edges
  • 12mm wbp external grade plywood is fitted to the top surface
  • A layer of BBA approved breathable membrane is fitted as an underfelt
  • A layer of 38kg mineral felt will be fitted as the top surface, this will be secured using galvanised staples.
  • In the case of a large roof, pressure treated batons are fitted perpendicular to the roof felt
  • The roof edges will be secured with a facia board, the top finished with a ridge board and trim is fitted along the bottom.
  • Guttering is always recommended and can either be fitted by us or retrospectively by you once installed.

Felt Shingled Roof

A similar product to mineral felt, with the same durability but a more attractive finish which resembles individual house tiles

  • The roof bearers are fitted to span across the apex: the size would depend on the span but it would be a minimum of 75mm x 50mm.  The timber would be good quality redwood, planned with swept edges
  • 12mm wbp external grade plywood is fitted to the top surface
  • A layer of BBA approved breathable membrane is fitted as an under felt
  • A layer of felt shingles will be fitted as the top surface, this will be secured using galvanised staples
  • The roof edges will be secured with a facia board, the top finished with a ridge board and trim fitted to the bottom.
  • Guttering is always recommended and can either be fitted by us or retrospectively by you once installed.

Cedar Shingled Roof

Natural Canadian cedar shingles fitted give a beautiful natural finish.  The shingles are initially a reddish brown colour, but within a year will naturally go a silver grey colour.  It is recommended that the roof pitch is at least 30degrees to avoid the shingles becoming waterlogged during wet periods of weather.

  • The roof bearers are fitted to span across the apex: the size would depend on the span but it would be a minimum of 75mm x 50mm.  The timber would be good quality redwood, planned with swept edges
  • 12mm wbp external grade plywood is fitted to the top surface
  • Two layers of BBA approved breathable membrane is fitted as an under felt
  • A layer of cedar shingles will be fitted as the top surface, this will be secured using galvanised staples
  • The roof edges will be secured with a facia board, the top finished with a ridge board and trim fitted to the bottom.
  • Guttering is always recommended and can either be fitted by us or retrospectively by you once installed.

Slate Effect Roof

Giving a more contemporary feel these are artificial slate tiles made by cembrite.  They are the same tiles as used on houses and look like natural slate.   They are a little more uniform than the natural alternative

  • The roof bearers are fitted to span across the apex: the size would depend on the span but it would be a minimum of 75mm x 50mm.  The timber would be good quality redwood, planned with swept edges
  • 12mm wbp external grade plywood is fitted to the top surface
  • Two layers of BBA approved breathable membrane is fitted as an underfelt
  • A layer of slate effect tiles are fitted as the top surface, this will be secured using galvanised staples

  • Guttering is always recommended and can either be fitted by us or retrospectively by you once installed.

Castle Roof

This is a style of roof that is fitted where there is a requirement to walk on top of the roof.  Rain will flow through the decking boards and then travel off the roof to the back leaving the internal area dry.

  • Appropriate size roof bearers (minimum of 75mm x 50mm) with angle cut go front to back, these would be from a good quality redwood timber that is planned with swept edges
  • 12mm external grade plywood fitted
  • 2 layers of underfelt
  • Tanolised bearers fitted with same angle as the base bearers but reversed to bring the roof back to a flat surface

We Are Unable To Accept New Commissions Presently

We are a small company, set up and run by Richard and Kay and supported by a skilled team of 4 who help build and deliver our projects.

Richard has recently had a health scare, and during the next few months of his recuperation we have decided, reluctantly, to limit the number of projects we take on and have decided to stop taking new commissions until December 2021.

Richard does all the design and manages the build and installation, and Kay is the voice you will speak to and help with advice and then making sure your project runs smoothly from inception to the children enjoying it in your garden. Over the past 30 years we have completed well over 1,000 projects, all to a greater or lesser extent custom designed. It is a great privilege to design and build playhouse and treehouses, and for us almost as much fun to design and build as the children have pleasure thereafter. We firmly believe that in order to design and build a great playhouse project you must love it just as much. We do love what we do and this makes it all the more difficult for us to pause enquiries, but health is paramount so makes this the only decision.

We assure all existing customers that your delivery obligations will be met in full and are always available for any queries about existing products.

If you would like to register an interest for a project in 2022, please just send us an email or give us a call and we will re-connect at the end of the year by which time Richard will be fully charged and ready to enjoy exciting new projects.

Thank you for your support
